I don't know about XP, but I have an EPROM burner (EMP-20) which barely 
works under 2K.  To let it access the parallel port, in addition to 
having to install a driver, you must run its DOS program in "full-
screen" mode.  To get in and out of full-screen mode, you have to type 
ALT-ENTER, but you can set the program to start in full-screen mode.

Whoever's crazy idea it was to allow direct access to I/O ports based on 
the screen display mode should be shot.
