Some more "what if" scenarios:

What if Apple had introduced a Apple II compatible MAC back in 1986? 
Would Apple be struggling uphill against Windows now?  Unfortunately,
Apple's vision (for whatever it was worth) they wanted two lines: one
for home, one for business. Low Cost PC's began invading the market
long before the low-cost Mac's appeared and that hurt Apple's
Educational/home Markets.  Windows slowly dominated and the business
segment struggled as well.

What if that "Super II" had been introduced?  Assuming it was a huge
success and had developer support the IIGS never enjoyed, what would
have happened to the Mac?  Remember, Apple wanted separation in
business and home/educational markets.  I find it hard to imagine that
Apple could support TWO systems successfully.  I think both the "Super
II" and the "Mac" would have merged eventually and Apple would branch
off systems for each market.

In a strange way, Apple has done what I just suggested, just way too
late.  Now you have the Mac G4's for heavy business applications, the
powerbooks for laptops, and the IMAC's for home use. If Apple could
have given the II a chance, we could be using our Apple II G4's at
work, traveling with our Apple II Powerbooks, and computing at home
with our Apple IIEGS (Enhanced GS :)
