We agree.

I was talking about people working on essentially _independent_
software or hardware projects, dependent only on a common
understanding of a machine architecture.  For example, you
write a spreadsheet while I build a compiler.

I thought you were referring to a potential market.

It seems to me that dozens is possible, perhaps up to 2 hundreds, but I doubt that anyone creating hard/software that you must PAY for won't sell much beyond that, assuming they sold that much.
