A good idea--but it has a problem in the specifics.

Apple cassette signals are decoded by timing the intervals
between zero crossings, and MP3 compression does not
preserve this information well (largely because it is inaudible
to the human ear).

A .wav file would do the job, but would be several times
larger (though it might .zip compress pretty well ;-).
