Depends on where the RAM is. I spent ages stripping down disk drives trying
to work out what the hell was wrong with my ][+ 13 sector, and it turned out
that the RAM had bad connections. Reseating it made it work. Then I was
copying some code, and it vanished - again, bad RAM connections.

The connections corrode. You'll get intermittent failures, then one day,
there is no connection.

Apples are tough. When testing boards, Apple engineers just chucked them
into the ][ to save losing a program in memory (IIRC this was done when
writing DOS or something to do with the mouse board, and needing to save it,
when there was no disk drive connected - so they just chucked the card in,
bang, and it worked). Don't try this at home.

Strip the computer, get a chip puller and systematically lift and push down
(don't remove them fully at this stage) every chip.

No, but if your //e was broken, it wouldn't be a sure way of checking the
][europlus.
