Poke around on http://www.folklore.org/index.py for lots of good details on
the early history of the Mac. There are lots of tidbits in there about
ongoing II projects as well, such as the mouse card.
What's most fascinating to me is that after programming an Apple II
(inexorable frame buffer, slow speed, minimal memory, zilch disk space, ...)
and then using a Mac (a Mac Plus!), the difference seemed astronomical and
the relationship between the two Apple lineages seemed tenuous at best,
other than stylish beige cases. Reading folklore.org you can really see that
the Mac was, in many ways, a descendant of the II just as much as of the
Lisa. The first Mac was essentually a daughtercard of a II!
