Well, I am here to answer my own question.

It looks like the battery RAM on my test machine got hosed.  The battery is
soldered in, so I can't take it out to reset the RAM.

I put the TWGS in a ROM 03 with a Vulcan 40MB drive and 6MB of RAM. It has
been running continual self-test with the 50MHz oscillator for about half an
hour now - no problems at all.  I'm going to leave it to run overnight and
see what happens.

Anybody know how to reset the battery RAM of a Rom 01 without removing the
battery?
