Apple made a fundamental error when it chose to go with its low-volume, high price line (Mac). Atari and Commodore made the same mistake; so, the screw up is not exclusive to Apple.
Basically, all of the major computer makers underestimated the significance of the home market. What's special about Apple is that, in the Apple II, it had the user base and means to achieve dominance in hardware and software into the 21st century; but, it chose to abandon its roots and persue quickie profits.
However picturesque the idea, Apple did not eat its own young. Perhaps it should have.
