I'll let others chime in on the ethernet cards and software.
I'll tell you some of the things I do. Years ago I got an ISP who could
provide a shell account ( oddly enough or perhaps perfectly appropriate it
was with Morgan Davis). Then using Apple // terminal software ( I used
ProTerm) you could surf and download with Lynx and other serverside
programs.
I heard shell accounts were getting hard to get. Others talk of installing
linux on an x86 an creating a shell there them connecting to an ISP.
I picked up a Performa 550 for $2.50 and using DAVE it is part of my
windows network. I have the //gs doing local talk to the performa and that
completes the chain.
For the Apple //e which is used more often, I mostly download stuff to the
PC and use ProTerm to null modem the stuff back and forth. Besides I am more
likely to use it on the PC anyway in an emulator.
If I was to transfer a large amount of stuff I would probably get it on the
//gs and sneaker net it to the //e .
There are plenty of free term programs that will work for you as well as ADT
.
