Actually, one specific version (From memory, I'm wanting to say it was 
1.4 - trust that EXACTLY as far as you can throw it, though...) of 
ProDOS had a 65C02 instruction that got left in when it shouldn't have 
been. The next release fixed that.

I'm pretty certain that prior to ProDOS 16, the only "unusual" 
requirement to run ProDOS was an ext. 80-col card or compatible. It had 
to be the extended version (or something that was compatible with it) 
rather than just a "plain" 80-col card, though, since the reason it was 
needed was for the extra 64K of RAM, which is where 95% or more of 
ProDOS lives once it gets loaded up. Apple did their best to allow the 
older hardware to run ProDOS, and those efforts included specifically 
avoiding use of 65C02 instructions that might not be avaiable on older 
rigs.
