So far, the drive sounds like it's doing what it's supposed to do--
except reading the disk. ;-)
There is no danger in turning the head-positioning stepper
while power is off.
Check all connectors, too--they are a common source of
problems.
You may want to try attaching an external disk and seeing
what it can do. (Didn't the Laser 128 support booting from
an external drive?)
