Except Microsoft wasn't the competition back then.  Not only did the 
license parts of BASIC for Applesoft BASIC, but they provided a lot of 
the software for the Macintosh.

Except that the Apple II wasn't much of a performer by the time the 
Macintosh was introduced.  To my knowledge, none of the later machines 
resolved that issue.
