Without having seen the code (and at risk of repeating what someone else has
said), normal text needs to be written to the screen with the high bit set. 
With the high bit clear, you'll get a mix of inverse and flashing text with
no lowercase (standard firmware and character set) or inverse text with
lowercase (80-column firmware and character set).
