That defeats the whole purpose of the FAQ. The idea is for people who are
new to the area to find the information easily. Putting this information
in another newsgroup makes it harder to find. It also makes it more
difficult for the regulars to say RTFM if the FAQ is nowhere to be found.
In this specific instance we have a constant barrage of Mac and PC
newbies who assume "Apple" = "Mac". Since you are on Google you can check
the archives for the times when the Mac folks tried to take over this
group. Having the FAQ helps establish the demarcation between the two
groups. In essence the only people making inappropriate posts here (in
spite of the FAQ) are those who never had a clue to begin with or are
spammers. Although the FAQ is not responsible for the behaviour of most of
the (appropriate) posters it has certainly helped limit the inappropriate
posts.
