Update: I found an ad for the Basis 108 in the April 1982 Byte magazine.
That's the earliest ad that I've found so far, but I'm hoping that there
might be some earlier ads in Apple II specific magazines.

When did the early Apple II magazines begin?

Good question.
Call-A.P.P.L.E. might be the first. It did start in 1978 but I get
the impression it was more of a newsletter at first. I have Volume
III,No.1 which is the January 1980 issue.
Nibble started in 1980 I believe. I have Volume 2, No.2 from 1981
Apple Orchards first issue was the March/April 1980
Peelings II started in 1980. I have Volume 2 No.6 which is Nov/Dec 1981

I think that's about as good as I can do for plottong the Apple II magazine startup
