I've been playing with the external copy command on the Beagle
Brother's Big U disk. It works fin on Prodos 1.1.1. It does not work
fine on 1.9 or 2.0.3. Further experimenting shows that it depends on
some behavior in Basic system 1.1. So if I load basic system 1.1 on a
prodos 2.0.3 kernel, then no problems.
The exact breakage on Basic system 1.5 (goes with 2.0.3) is that it
just plain hangs, after correctly doing the copy. With basic system
1.4.1 (goes with 1.9) it seems to work Ok, But if you type another
prodos command right away ( ie. do the copy, then cat), it generates a
syntax error.
But if you use an applesoft command first, like List, then do a cat,
it works again. The copied file is fine, by the way. The problem is
at the end of the command, getting back to Basic.
I dumped the Copy code, and there are no illegal calls to inside
Basic.system, (Unlike several other of the add-on commands on that
disk.) There is a mildly illegal call to FC20 in the monitor, just
before vtab. There are lots of calls, reads, and writes to the global
page (BExx), but that is supposed to be OK.
So does anyone out there have an idea what might have changed to break
the hand-off back to basic? It might have been some change relating to
the addition of appletalk support in Basic System 1.2, but I don't
have a copy of that handy to see if it works. I didn't see any mention
of something helpful in the technotes either.
On a related subject. When the Beagles went out of business, did they
post the last revisions of their Beagle Oldies that went freeware
somewhere? I'm still looking for the prodos version of Doubletake.
Everyone sends in the dos 3.3 version, and the prodos verison is
probably on the flip side, like it was for Extra-K. It should be
version 2.1, or newer, if there is one.
Anyway, I need that copy command to work so my applesoft program can
copy a file from the ram disk to a floppy under program control. So
If I can't figure this out, I'll have to give up the bug fixes in the
newer versions of Prodos and go back to 1.1.
Thanks;
