Installing Panther on B/W G3

Hi,
I've been trying to install Panther on my blue and white G3 but I can't seem
to get anywhere. What happens is...
Boot into OS9, select install Panther, machine re starts then I just get a
black screen.
I tried putting the hard drive in a G4 installing panther then popping it
back into the G3...same thing when I select boot from OS X...just a black
screen.
I've heard there are problems with certain graphics cards on B/W and panther
but I have the ATI rage which is supposed to work fine.
Any help is much appreciated.
