Questions 3 & 4 may be related.
I have found that the Zip drive needs to be at the end of the SCSI
chain. Also it is nromally terminated. This will effectively prevent
things farther down the SCSI chain from being accessed properly, even if
they look like they are there. Swap the CD and the Zip around and/or
turn of the termination on the Zip drive. (There is a switch between
the SCSI connectors on mine.)
