After you connect, it sends the welcome and login immediately..
Also, it's 100% ASCII.. It's not a "real" telnet connection; that is,
it doesn't start the connection off as an NVT (network virtual
terminal) as per the official telnet specs. I suspect that your
telnet client is trying to do some negotiating once the connection is
established. That being the case, you should experience the same
behaviour if you were to telnet the same way to an SMTP or POP3
server.
