Well, not just the 970. Apart from anything else, the G5/970 isn't the
same CPU as far as I'm aware; the 970 lacks Altivec. Apple, IBM,
Motorola formed the PowerPC Alliance, IIRC. If I'm remembering right,
though, the basic guts of the PowerPC can be traced back to an IBM RISC
Minicomputer from the late 70s, and the PowerPC is basically IBM's POWER
RISC CPU with various instructions omitted for ease of
development/production.
