Honestly, I'm in the preliminary decision-making
part of several possibilities in how to go about
making the best economically sound hardware items
for the IIc, and alternate version of the same for
the slotted IIs. Primarily concerned with mass
storage devices for the II+, and unenhanced IIe,
although it seems that these are easier to work
up for the IIc and up. For the IIc, this is leaning
towards a multifaceted smartport support device,
which will attach to the external floppy port and
allow other devices, which I will also be designing,
or data will be provided for others to design their
own. There is also a video adapter that I have been
working at now for close to 8 months, which hopefully
will let you use a VGA monitor on the IIgs, in place
of the, ever decreasing in availability, RGB monitors.
As you can see, there are more ideas than design at
this point, but I'm narrowing things down and should
be close to building a prototype of a couple things
early 2004. A short list of items considered are:
IDE controller: hard drive, CF card adapter
Internal 3.5" hard drive for IIc with connector
to be installed to allow the internal floppy
port to be used with external 5.25" drives.
The RGB to VGA adapter noted above, possibly
included or separate Composite to VGA. More
than likely separate for those not needing
the entire device for Composite adaptation.
Flash Rom drive in different capacities from
512K to 4 MB for Apple II up to the IIc+.
Fully bootable and writeable rom drive so
files can be stored and the card removed to
let you have different systems on each card
and insert the one you want to run today.
Not decided yet if there will be a dongle to
accomodate a cartridge type system whereby
the main card remains in the Apple II and
from there daughtercards with the flash roms
on them to be changed outside the machine.
Also not decided as yet will be whether it
will have a bootable system written to eprom
for those who wish a plug'n'play design.
That's it so far. Any views that might help
with the decision of how to proceed will
be accepted and appreciated. I'd much rather
design things that the users want, than to be
stuck with a pile of cards that I can't offer.
