It has a video coprocessor, the TI 9918/9918a/9928 chip, and 16K of
video ram.
With the proper software, you get 259X192 resolution, 16 "true" colors
(not dithered), 32 "planes" (so you can have a 3D effect, like the NES)
and 32 hardware sprites.
In addition, since the video memory is on the card, it's possible that
the Apple has freed up 16K of RAm for program code, and/or you can have
the Apple display a text only on a separate screen while the sprite card
is doing color graphics.
