][GIF is trying to solve a very difficult problem, since it has such
a limited palette available on the Apple II, even in DHR.
It sounds like you're doing the right things in Photoshop.
If you can bypass ][GIF entirely, you'll be ahead of the game.
Maybe there's a relatively simple .bmp to Apple II conversion...
