Bill Gates on television said "The British had some good computers too,
the Sinclair ones for example - Pity they didn't run DOS though". One
of the reasons they are good is that they did not.

That was EGA (Enhanced Graphics Adapter).

The Sinclair ZX81 (launched in 1981) sold more than any other computer
had every sold, at that time. While the follow up computer the
Sinclair ZX Spectrum was even more successful. Outside of the USA where
the Spectrum was not aimed at so much after Timex Computers closed
down, the Spectrum easily beat the last 3. I bet that users of some
of the above 3 systems do not say anything, because there are non of
them left, among other reasons.
Hi Apple, Atari, Radio Shack users. While these computer are fine, not
everybody is rich and can afford to spend over a thousand pounds for an
Apple II. Thats many thousands of US Dollars in real terms. The Spectrum
is just as good, if not better than these 3, and was a computer for the
masses and had the greatest games.
As for Commodore PET/Vic 20/C64, don't get me started, many flame wars
have been fort over this issue, over points like the problems with C64
BASIC (hi-res grahics etc).

You are missing the point, Un*x is better than M$ Windows. Portables
would have better battery life if they used the ARM CPU (the worlds most
popular processor), but because of the M$ monopoly they can't. As I write
this on an ARM based system running RISC OS, while Intel still have not
produced a successful RISC architecture of their own yet, i860/i960 and
Itanium have all failed so far. An Athlon can use 75 Watts while the ARM
in this computer uses less than half a watt.
Bill Gates meet Hermann Hauser co-founder of Acorn to persuade him to
use use M$-DOS on his popular BBC Micros. Hermann said why would I want
make such a retrograde step as that, when BBC BASIC is better than
GW-BASIC and the BBC Micro has built in networking. Bill Gates said what
is networking, is this the man *you* want running the computer industry.
