Hi Jim, Sound like you want a Nintendo Gameboy SP.I've had a chance to play around with one it does seem like a 8-bit computer with souped up graphics and sound. Even old titles like Defender of the Crown are available for it. I'm surprised that titled like Bard's Tale haven't been ported over to it.
Besides, I have a PocketPC and I got the Frodo C-64 emulator running on it. Let me tell you...it was a pain to use. The screen was just too small to read, the keyboard was awkward to use and I'm sure playing any games would quickly kill off my keypad and buttons.

With all these handheld devices....wouldn't it be neat to have a handheld IIgs-compatible device.....if not the hardware structure, maybe an emulator burned to a chip..using CompactFlash cards for data and apps.....and in this fantasy of mine....software developed for this device could be downloaded to a real IIgs and run....perhaps ... Might be neat to play The Immortal or Bard's Tale on a handheld device!
