Apple IIgs. Easily capable of 8Mhz, Apple knocked it back to 2.8 so it
was slower than the monochrome and more expensive Mac SE...

Apple settled on 2.8Mhz because that was the fastest available (and

reliable in

quantity) 65816 at the time that would work (reliably) with all the other
custom hardware in the ROM00 and 01 motherboards..


Actually I believe they used a 4 mhz 65C816 and cut it back due to
disk access and video requirements.

There wasn't (or so I've read) a 4 mhz version availible at the time of development.
