Among the many:
- Apple (I)
Not really abandoned, as it was merely replaced.
- Apple II
Well, if you think being developed from a 4K, 8-bit machine into a 1Mb,
16-Bit machine with 15-channel stereo sound, but almost entirely
compatible with previous versions, is abandoning... and continuing to
produce and sell 8-bit versions until 1991, actively developing the
hardware to reduce the chip count to 4 ICs in the last ones/LC //e
cards...
- Apple III
It wasn't abandoned, it flopped. Big difference ;)
- Apple Lisa
Evolved into Macintosh, and despite the lack of sound, complicated
physical construction and such, was continued alongside it as the Mac XL
until the Plus came along. Not really abandoned, then...
- Apple Newton
I'll give you that one. Perfectly good platform, perfectly good
hardware, perfectly good OS. No reason I can see to can it, other than a
good relationship with Palm - which is of course why my Wireless Palm
can synch to PC over WiFi, but has to be plugged into the USB base to
synch to my G4...
And the Bandai/Apple Pippin.
Compare that to Atari:
400/800/XL - from 1979 to 1986, technically. XE development stopped at
the XE VGS (not so much development as repackaging).
2600 - from '77 to around '85, but sold for ages by dint of them
producing waaaay too many. Incompatible with the 400 computer line.
7800 - about a year. Technically '79-ish, but put on ice for so long it
wasn't sold until what, '84? Incompatible with anything else.
5200 - repackaged 400 but not compatible - until emulators came along.
ST range - incompatible with earlier 8-bit.
Falcon - barely compatible with the ST range.
Need I go on? And lets not even get started on Commodore, who used every
CPU going around the time, from 6502 to Z80 to 6809, plus 3 or 4
different video chips... 384 range, anyone?
