The Voyage of the Mimi: Whales and Their Environments. Bank Street
College Project in Science and Mathematics.

The Bank Street Laboratory consists of an interface board and 6
sensors, which measure temperature, loudness and pitch of sounds, and
the intensity of light.

Whales and Their Environments, a learning module derived from The
Voyage of the Mimi video series, is about the environments of whales
and people. An integral part of this module is The Bank Street
Laboratory, a combination of software and hardware that allows
students to collect, store, display, and analyze information about 3
physical phenomenaheat and temperature, sound, and light. Students
examine the effects of these phenomena on the lives and environment of
humans and whales. The activities are designed to explore the
properties of the phenomena through a variety of measurement and
display formats. Examples of activities include comparing temperature
scales, testing insulators, measuring heat loss, exploring the
loudness of sound, investigating the frequency of sound, measuring the
speed of sound, investigating light intensity and distance from the
source, scattering light, and measuring reflection.
