Speaking of new hardware, you can connect your Disk II drive to your
PC's printer port and write some really efficient assembler code. A
state machine like that designed by Woz in the late '70s may help. Or a
complete disk II controller card. Replace the '259er with a parallel
latch, and only two bytes will be needed.
