Re: Mouse using graphics programs?

On a Mac's mouse socket pins 1 and 3 are labelled as ground, and I
assume the Apple mouse card is the same. On the IIc mouse/joystick
connector pin 1 is used for Mouse ID (mouse) or pushbutton 1 (joystick)
and pin 3 only is ground.
On the third-party mouse I have pin 1 is connected directly to pin 3.
This mouse works with my IIc, and is advertised to work with a Mac and
Apple II mouse card as well. So it would seem for the IIc to work with a
mouse, the mouse has to pull pin 1 directly to ground. I suspect that
the early mice didn't have this link, and it was only added after the
Apple IIc was released.
A quick test with an ohmeter will verify if pins 1 and 3 are connected
in the plugs of the mice you have that don't work, versus the ones that
do work.
I became curious and checked the 9 pin mice I have on hand.
Tried two A2M2070 which both worked with the IIc.
Four A2M4015 which all worked with the IIc
Twelve M0100 of which 5 worked with the IIc and 7 didn't
I likely have another dozen or so mice in storage but it'd be a lot
of work finding them.
My Kensington Turbo Mouse 2 works with the IIc but not my Turbo Mouse 1
The Turbo Mouse 1 & 2 have a pass-through connector on them for people
that want to use both a mouse & a trackball. When I tried a mouse that
had worked on the Turbo Mouse 1, it wouldn't function. Interestingly,
a mouse that wouldn't work by itself would work when connected to the
Turbo Mouse 2 pass-through connector.
I tried an ohm meter between pins 1 and 3 and they seem to be connected
in all the mice whether they worked with the IIc or not.
I did find two things that're different between the between the
mice that work and the ones that don't. All the working mice have
"made in USA" on the bottom sticker. None of the Mice marked made in
Malasia or Japan worked on my IIc. Also all the mice that don't work
have the cord 590-0055A while none of the working mice had this cord.
Maybe someone could check theirs and see if they get the same results
or not.
