Color TVs (and monitors) have degaussing coils built in around the edge of
the screen, to get rid of the magnetization that can build up on the shadow
mask. (That's the source of the buzzing/humming sound when you switch on
your monitor.) The magnetic field put out by the coil is a Bad Thing for
your data. Black-and-white TVs, green-screen monitors, and other monochrome
displays don't have degaussing coils because the tubes have no shadow mask
to demagnetize. (They still have electromagnetic deflection coils at the
back of the tube, but they're not located just under the top front edge of
the monitor case.)
