The desktop is not equal to the hard drive. It's some kind of virtual
space shared by all mounted disks. Although you dragged your files to
the desktop they are still physically located on the floppy.

You need to first drag your files to the hard drive icon itself, so that
they move physically off of the floppy. Then you can eject your floppy and
move the files from the hard drive window to the desktop if you want to.
