It takes more than just a 5.25" floppy drive...floppy drives on the Apple II
used a completely different (and incompatible) recording method, so you
would need some sort of interface card that supported it. Good luck finding
one of those.

A serial cable won't do you much good unless a serial card is also installed
in the IIe. Maybe he doesn't have one (which is probable if the computer
was used with a parallel printer and no modem).
(Three Super Serial Cards are up on eBay right now. One's even at a
reasonable price. You'll still need telecom software to make any use of it,
but ProTERM's only $20, last time I checked.)
