It certainly isn't the first card not to use an Apple standard partition
table. I have a couple of Cirtech SCSI cards that just divide the disk into
32MB slices. The CMS SCSI car used jumpers to set partition sizes I believe.

The common denominator is that none of these cards has any RAM on board.
If you don't have RAM to store the partition table then you would have to
re-read it each time you access the drive and this would be terribly
inefficient. The ][+ & //e have no safe area of RAM to use on the motherboard.
