Does the Apple//e require special disks?

I recently got 10  5-1/2"double sided high density Sony disks from Ebay
to make backup copies of my Apple //e disks and got a message "unable to
write". Then I tried making a copy on the reverse side of an old disk
that has an apple program on it made a good copy of it. This leads me to
believe that the Apple disk drives are OK. I know that the Apple doesn't
need high density disks but I didn't think it would not work with them.
I tried it several times just to make sure. The Sony disks came in the
original sealed package with a lifetime warranty. My question is: is it
normal that the high density disks do not work on the Apple //e drives?
