There was an article on slashdot.org a few weeks back about AOL blocking
access from some DSL providers.  The trouble was that they were getting
roughly two billion pieces of spam per day and were having trouble handling
the load on their spam filters, so they decided to block off some of the
major sources: people with unprotected Windows boxes that were infected
with trojans and used as spam relays.

They might have done something similar for cable modem networks.  I'd
expect AOL to send back a 553 response, but it's possible they may just
drop all the messages on the floor.
