GNO is a Unix look-alike for the GS, altough a hard disk is required for it.
RAM requirement is hefty and an accelerator card is strongly recommended.

To have fun programming GS Desktop apps and using the numerous tool boxes in
ROM, I recommend Byte Works ORCA languages: C, Basic, Pascal, Assembler, the
choice is yours.  I use Orca/Pascal and I'm very happy with it.

A hard disk which can boot GS/OS 6.1 is a 'must have' above any other
options.  I'm lucky to have a Vulcan 40Mb HD in my GS.  I hope it won't fail
:-)
