Where is Ian Schmidt (or, can you help with my SoundMeister)?

All,

Just picked up a SoundMeister from eBay. I'm delighted with the quality of
the stereo output.

However, I just can't seem to get anything to digitize through the mic port.
Anything I record comes back as total silence. Here's what I know:

- The problem is slot-independent. I've tried 1 and 4, with equal results,
both set to Your Card.
- I've tried two different microphones, same results with each.
- I don't *think* there's a physical problem with the card - but if someone
can tell me simple pin pairings to check with a continuity tester, that
might help. Both output ports work, it's only input that's giving me fits.
- I get the same results whether the SoundMeister Control Panel is set to
mic or line in, ditto the DigitalStudio 0.9b2 recording preferences
- DigitalStudio's oscilloscope shows very unusual "activity", with what
looks like a line of 'noise' far below the zero point
- AudioZap 2.0 does exactly the same thing with its oscilloscope
- In fact, AudioZap shows similar "freaking out" even with the card
unplugged from the machine and the microphone removed!
- Finally, I can't even select the SoundMeister in AudioZap - I can flip
between different slots, but the SoundMeister option is consistently greyed
out. Is it supposed to be this way?

Any help whatsoever appreciated. I realize the recording quality will be
very low even on a good day, but I'd like to see this thing work at all!
