You have encountered what is perhaps the most serious bug in the AppleWorks 5.0
(five-oh) release. Someone at Quality computers tried to tweak the ImageWriter
II that comes with (set up in) AppleWorks 5.0 after the professional
programmers turned in the master disk.

Here is an excerpt from the TEXAS II newsletter, which explains the problem,
and what to do about it. Of course, it might be better simply to update to
AppleWorks 5.1, which fixes this and other bugs, and adds some cool new
features.

The AppleWorks 5.0 default ImageWriter II printer contains an unreliable
interface code.
Someone at Quality Computers entered special codes for color printing in the
default ImageWriter II printer at the very last moment, after all testing was
done. They further complicated it by setting the interface code to Control-I
80N Esc-c (Restore power on defaults) in an attempt to cancel color codes and
revert to black print with each startup. Unfortunately, other settings, such as
near letter-quality printing, are cancelled, too. The printout shifts into
draft mode for no apparent reason.

This problem only affects the printer which comes already installed with
AppleWorks 5.0. Use "Remove a printer," then "Install a printer" to replace the
faulty ImageWriter II with a fresh one. If you don't use an ImageWriter II at
all, this problem won't affect you. You probably already replaced it with your
own printer setup long ago.
