The jury is still out on the durability of CD-Rs but the conventional wisdom is
that most of the common (gold reflective layer/green dye layer) CD-Rs have a 10
year rated lifespan. Some reflective layer/dye layer combinations are worse
although the silver/blue ones are supposed to have a 100 year life rating.
The physical durability of a CD-R is another issue. Few people realize that
the label side of the CD-R is the data side and it is usually only covered with
a very thin coat of lacquer. This lacquer can easily be dissolved by some felt
marker inks. Once this happens the reflective layer or dye underneath can
become oxidized corrupting the data.
