Are you sure you can't get it to run on your Color Classic?

On my Mac LC475 (which is a 68040 as well), I have my internal hard drive
set up with MacOS 7.1. My external hard drive had MacOS 8.1 which does not
allow me to switch off 32 bit addressing, but my internal with 7.1
installed on it allows me to turn off 32 bit addressing.

I would think that your Color Classic, with an old enough version of the
MacOS would allow you to turn off 32 bit, no?
