Actually, it's the other way around.  Dark materials look darker
when they are glossy, because specular reflection is less diffusive
than reflection from a matte surface.  This is why glossy photographs
have better visual contrast than matte photographs, and why your
car's finish looks "deeper" when it's waxed.
