  But the coolness of them made it worth hearing, I'd imagine.

  The first consumer HD I saw in person was for an Apple ('78 or
'79?). Don't recall the sound, except the screams from my wallet.

(Nowadays I like the old SyQuest drives for the Apple, Mac, and PCs.
Excellent performance and great for file swapping -- but they are loud
so I'm looking at Zips)
