I haven't done anything yet, but I can snag that chip off a good
drive, may have one around here too.

This is why I love NGs!! Knowledge is power.

Ok, back to Marsha's questions. I'm not sure about the 2nd drive. My
procedure was flawed (I may have tried to boot damaged disks in the
"debug" process). I do know that when I unplugged the bad drive and
replaced it -- it booted (same apple, controller card, etc.).

(Confessions: At one point I wasn't sure if the "bad Apple" was
damaging drives or what. So I took everything except the monitor and
tossed it in the trash - now I get to fish it out.)
