I would add to Michael Black's response that the 2MHz version of the
processor was used in the //e because it's shorter timing margins (for
setup and hold times) were needed to compensate for the somewhat
slower signals synthesized by the MMU and IOU ASICs relative to
discrete LSTTL in earlier Apple II's. The processor is still clocked
at approximately 1MHz, it's just the more tolerant timing margins
that required that the 2MHz-capable model be used.
