monitor on IIgs

I have a IIgs and when I connected an old Apple monitor to the "monitor"
port the screen seemed to have the notice of ROM version, but warped.
Before I could get that fixed the screen went dark. I have since tested
the monitor of a PowerPC and it does work.
Question is, there any reason that this monitor type should not function
on a IIgs? I realize the monitor came out long after the last IIgs.
