Newzbot has lots (over 500 on their list) of free news servers:

Virtually all carry the apple newsgroups and most are much faster than Google
Groups.  The big drawback is that most don't support posting.  I used several
different servers from their list (I can't remember which ones) a couple years
ago.  I usually picked one that was fast and retained the messages for a long
time and if it didn't support posting I used Google Groups for that, but you
could use another free one for posting (there are a few).
