Wow... what a question. At a high level, I see the following
alternatives:

Serial cable
Appleshare over localtalk cabling
IP over ethernet 
IP over localtalk with MacIP router

Each option has its own hardware and software requirements, and its
own level of interoperability.

Yes, with IP this is easily done.

Personally I do this with IP over localtalk with MacIP router (Cayman
Gatorbox CS rack) to Ethernet through a PC that dials into internet.
