That is incorrect.
Apple IIGS could use any of the MIDI interfaces of early Macs
(pre-PowerPC). Just like the Mac, you plugged the box into
one of the IIGS' two serial ports. You could then start recording
using synthLAB right away.
Third party software would be better as synthLAB was just a
demo program really but it will give you an idea of what is
possible.
You need to install the MIDI tools/driver from the GS/OS
install disks.
I had such a Mac MIDI box on my IIGS and it worked great.
If you really wanted to take advantage of IIGS MIDI, you
would get MasterTracks Jr. for sequencing and Pyware's
MusicWriter for notation.
You don't need a sound card at all for IIGS MIDI. Besides,
they were not really sound cards. IIGS sound is generated
by the IIGS' Ensoniq sound chip, on the motherboard. The
sound cards were really stereo cards which decoded the
stereo channels output by the IIGS motherboard.
The stereo cards are more like the 5.1 receiver units that
you hook up to today's DVD players. The channels are
generated by the DVD player. The receiver just decodes
them.
