I've been wondering the same thing myself.  I currently make a living
by writing software in BASIC mostly using a language called
PowerBASIC.  It is an incredibly fast, lean BASIC compiler for Windows
that supports subs, functions, include files, macros, using some COM
objects and even supports inline assembly.  It also has some built in
commands to make writing GUI programs under Windows a little easier
for programmers not familiar with the Windows API.  You can create COM
servers, DLLs and Windows executables with this language.

This is nothing like BASIC from the 70's and 80's.
